Come here, little bird

Isabelle Thibeault is a wonderful French artist who makes and photographs paper mache heads of various animals, whether feathered, flippered or furry.
The fact that not only are these creations made, but then also brought to life in obviously carefully constructed photographs and settings creates thought provoking hybrid creatures- sometimes with the being acting animalistically, and other times playing with toy cameras and guitars, drawing further attention to the human characteristic that normally seems to be lost to the focus of the mask.
Have a look at Isabelle's dozens of other beautiful masks on her blog, but bear in mind it's French and google translate will be your friend.

Dear Sixteen year old me-

I live in Australia, and we're about to head into Summer.
I adore Summer, I love the pool, I love the sun, and I love the heat, just like so many other people my age. Thing is, so many of us aren't careful or wary of what the sun can do to us, or leave it for future-us to deal with.
I will admit, when I was younger I thought tanning was the 'cool thing' to do, and I was damn stupid. Hell, I'd rather be orange from a bottle than potentially give myself a deadly disease. I'm about to head on schoolies for a week to the beach, and especially going to be focusing on staying sunsmart after watching this. I've got a coverup, a stylish hat and a good supply of sunscreen to keep me going.
This video is a wakeup call, and needs to be shared, especially around Australia where it's already heading into the mid 30 degrees.
Stay safe.

Little Yellow Dress

It was the beautiful Tayla's 18th birthday last week, and was also one of the hottest days we've seen for a while, and then again one of the wettest too, but I accommodated for the first so chose this lovely bright summer dress from ASOS Curve.
It was lovely and summery but not good for wind. Flashing was common that day, and I apologise to a few of my friends. Oops.
I also didn't get a clear photo of the outfit, and the only full body shot shows me being classily barefoot.
So here's a bunch of candid shots with my lion hair and bright summer dress.
I also bought a second of these dresses which I'm planning on altering into a skirt and a crop top/bodice.
Sewing skills: activate!

The wonderful Brittney Lee

As a fairly impatient person who never quite mastered paper doll chains, these seem absolutely magical to me.
Brittney Lee is a marvellous illustrator who does intricate works with layers of paper. I can only just fathom how much work goes into the planning and construction of each piece.
(And, you know, she loves Harry Potter too, which automatically earns points with me.)
Basically, if you want to drool over some beautiful, high quality art, head over to her website and enjoy

Sorry!

Sorry I haven't posted anything for quite a while, but I've been doing exams and have just been extraordinarily lazy. I went out on Friday so should have a new outfit post soon.

Like a Version

I very rarely buy cd's because I am a cheapo, but I bought this on impulse after watching Owl Eyes cover of Pumped Up Kicks the other day.
I absolutely adore it! I'm not a big radio listener, but I love covers and reinterpretations of popular songs.
My favourite tracks are:
  • Dance The Way I Feel - Gossling
  • Sharp Dressed Man- The Beards
  • Somebody That I Used To Know- Eskimo Joe
  • Pumped Up Kicks- Owl Eyes
  • Everybody Wants To Rule The World- Andy Bull
I especially love the amount of Australian artists being wonderful. Local music is often lost behind the hype surrounding the bigger international acts, but Australia has some extremely quality artists.

Catherine Campbell Calendars- Yay Alliteration!

My birthday is coming up soon and Mum wanted to know what I would like.
Originally, I was coveting the Frankie 2012 calendar, but Catherine Campbell, one of my favourite Australian artists, has a set of monthly postcard sized prints. As I'll have limited space next year, with lots of wall, these will make either a beautiful mural or a discreet piece of useful art.
Buy them here at her etsy for only $20!

It's time to enter the big, bad world, Kids.

On the 27th of October I had my final day of High School.
Ever.
As in, I don't have to go back to my routine of my hour long bus trip every morning and afternoon, and sitting in school for 6 hours a day five times a week.
I sound like I'm whinging, but dear lord I will miss it.
My first few years of highschool were absolutely awful, I had depression and avoided going to school so I wouldn't have to face the people who made my life hell.
It's almost incomparable to my last few years at school. I found people I loved and who treated me like a human, and I looked forward to going to school almost every day.
I'm not an overly academic person, and I struggle to work hard, but I'm going to try in the future.
It's going to be odd not seeing the same 54 people who I spent the last 6 years with, thinking of us all taking our own paths and beginning adult lives.
Good luck.

Family Day

Today I went to get photos done with my extended family, including my brothers, sister, Dad and stepmum who I haven't seen for a few months.
Paddy just keeps growing and I'm waiting for him to finally overtake me as the tallest child. The photos were taken in the beautiful Botanical gardens in Ballarat, and I decided to wear my favourite Summer dress, my new Asos Curve dress.
I especially adore the cutout at the back, and it fits my waist perfectly.
I really cannot wait for it to start getting even hotter, I love Summer in Australia.

Get down to Bizness

I love face paint, bright colours, stop motion, and kids imitating adults.
This video clip ticks every single box.
Bizness by  tUnE-yArDs
I'm not necessarily enthusiastic about the name, but director Mimi Cave has done an amazing job.
Her other videos are just as bright and beautiful :)

Baggu

My birthday is coming up soon, and my Mum told me to write up a list of things I want.
This is a very dangerous thing to do, and I spent most of the last two nights scouring the internet for lovely things I might want. One of my favourite discoveries was the Baggu website, which I got unfathomably excited about.
As I won't have a car/bike next year, I'm going to be walking everywhere and therefore some sturdy shopping bags are a must. Also, I'm shallow, so they have to be stylish. They also have canvas backpacks and totes, and everything comes in beautiful bright colours and patterns. The majority of my birthday list is these bags, and I'll be nabbing a few for my friends for their birthdays/Christmas because they are the perfect mix of useful and aesthetically pleasing.

Princess in Black

I ordered this dress originally for my year 12 graduation, but it arrived the day after, which was shattering. I am in love with it though, and I'm planning on wearing it for my 18th birthday party in a month. It is so beautiful, and fits perfectly, and I feel like an absolute princess, especially when I sit down.
It's part of the ASOS Curve range, which is basically what my entire wardrobe is made of, but it is my biggest splurge on a piece of clothing to date, at $100. I also paid for express which was utterly pointless considering it was late anyway.
I also got my first fake tan, and I am really happy with it. It just makes me more confident to show my arms if I know that they aren't blotchy and white, and I'll definitely be having another in the future.

I'll post photos of my graduation + outfit later, even though I just repeated this dress, but I looked a heck of a lot better.

A little something to make me sweeter

This is the video I made of the aforementioned wedding. I have never been so proud of a project, and all of my friends just looked so beautiful. I may just already be feeling excessively nostalgic, but I know that in the future this is going to be cherished by me, and I'm already picturing a hilarious revival at Georgia or Lachy's future wedding.
As stressful as the whole thing was, I still love weddings and the amount of personality you can interject into them, whether through invitation, decoration, clothing or location. Weddings shouldn't be boring and stuffy, they should be full of love and smiles and fun between friends and family and everyone coming together.

It's 5714 x the world you know

In exactly sixty-nine days I am moving to the RMIT village in the middle of Melbourne, a city with a population of over 4 million.
I currently live in a town of just over 700 people, most of whom I know by name or by sight.
I am scared and excited and nauseous and hysterically happy about the fact that my life is about to change so dramatically, finally about to kick off.
I'm going from living within 100 metres of my Grandparents and Mother, to being three hours from them, and I can already tell that the independence will potentially go to my head.
First I have to attempt to survive the end of year 12, however, and get the 95.2 ATAR I need for my course, which I basically will not get.
But, positive thinking!

Oh mother

(image from Trixis)

Some people seem to be born mothers, full of love and warmth that just radiates to everyone they are near.
Today I was reminded of this when the office lady at school walked me to the sick-bay, tucked me into the bed and then checked in on me constantly to make sure I was okay.
Since becoming 'almost an adult', this doting has been completely missing from my life, and the amount I long for it kind of demonstrates the fact that we never truly grow up or stop needing our parents, we just need to be held and loved sometimes.
Apparently I'm also a motherly person, although not to children, but my friends and family. I
sometimes feel like I'm the fearsome-yet-cuddly Molly Weasley, and I'm okay with that.

Everything borrowed

I've been spending a fair slab of my time lately attempting to revise everything I need to know for my looming VCD exam, as well as all my other exams. I'm slightly more confident knowing that I have done quite well on my folio's, one of which involved the above photos from a mock wedding I organised starring my beautiful friends. I am really proud of all of us, and my teacher has submitted my work into the Melbourne Top Designs, so fingers crossed that by some miracle I get chosen.
I've worked quite hard all year and it's a little disconcerting that I only have four days left of highschool, that everything has boiled down to this.
Que Sera Sera though.

Lace for Indian

Last night I went to my darling friend Phoebe's birthday dinner at an Indian restaurant.
I nabbed myself this gorgeous assymetrical dress I'd been eyeing off for a while and it went perfectly with my custom made heels from Vietnam!
I'm in a bit of pain, because my ankle strapping for netball caused a severe reaction which is visible in the photos- my days are a blur of awful painful shoes, cortisone cream and allergy pills. At the moment I'm just trying to keep a clear vision of the future and hope things start looking up soon!

What I wore:
Dress: Asos by River Island, size 16.
Earrings and flower ring: Glassons
Shoes and belt: Custom made
Nail polish: OPI

I'm adoring daylight savings here in Australia! It means that Summer is finally on its way, even if I played netball in the rain tonight.
Are you looking forward to a lovely hot Summer?

What if Sleeping Beauty never woke?

(Snow White: yasahime, Cinderella: liga-marta, Sleeping Beauty: kmye-chan)

I spend a lot of my free time reading fanfiction or imagining alternate endings to stories that already exist. I am of the firm belief that if a story touches you then you should be able to interpret your own version and personalise it. Technically Disney recreated the original dark stories of their Princesses into the flowingly dressed happy-ever-afters it is so common for us to see today, and many people aren't even aware that these animators didn't create the story, but manipulated it into what they preferred. This is exactly what amazing artists do, whether referring to the original gothic tones, creating a backstory for the character, or exploring the realistic consequences of events for characters.

Another fairytale project that caught my eye are Claire Hummel's reinterpretations of Disney Princesses in historically accurate clothing. Belle particularly has an entirely new wardrobe, her fitted flowing yellow gown transformed into a fitted bodice and wide skirt. A nice look for fashion as well as art.

Snap it!

I am renowned for being utterly awful at snapping people with tea-towels, I seem to just fling and flail them towards people causing minimal pain, or, in my finest moments, managing to hit myself.
I need an easy and pretty visual guide to help me along, and Melbourne designer Allira Tee has created just that.

Introductions:

My name is Jasmin and I am a passionate person.
I don't tend to do things half heartedly, and I have strong opinions and beliefs.
I am a political person who believes in equal rights for all, and who can't tolerate or comprehend people who find nothing wrong with discriminating against others, although I have encountered plenty in my life.
I am seventeen years old and about to make one of the biggest changes of my life thus far, moving to Melbourne at the beginning of next year to (hopefully) undertake a Bachelor of Professional Communications at RMIT.
I adore books, poetry, plays, movies, art and music, things that make me think and can hold my attention, or touch me emotionally, and I sometimes write songs and sing, accompanying myself with mediocre ukulele or guitar.

This is just a little bit of what makes me me.
